Amy Shen

Amy Shen joined Boxer & Gerson, LLP as an associate attorney in March, 2018 after nearly a 15-year career working on the defense side of the workers’ compensation table. Having faced Boxer & Gerson attorneys some 40 times over the years, she had grown both familiar and appreciative of the firm’s attributes and reputation for being “tough but fair,” and had more than once referred workers to the firm who needed effective representation.

Born in Massachusetts, Shen came to California as a young child when her father enrolled in dental school at the University of Southern California. The family moved to the Bay Area in 1980, with Shen attending local primary schools before graduating from Piedmont High School.

While on her way to earning her bachelor’s degree in legal studies from UC Berkeley in 1999, she volunteered at the Family Violence Law Center and mentored high school students at Oakland Technical High School. She then headed east for her J.D. degree in 2003 from Boston University School of Law, where she earned honors in the Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution Clinic for representing several clients in multiple hearings including Social Security Disability appeals.

Shen’s first job out of law school brought her back to the Bay Area with Liberty Mutual Insurance. Just over four years later, the large workers’ compensation defense firm of Mullen & Filippi in Oakand offered her a job as an associate. She became a partner shortly thereafter and spent nearly 11 years with the firm before transitioning to the plaintiff side of the table with Boxer & Gerson.

Fluent in Mandarin, Shen was drawn to defense work for the human connection it would afford her. “I learned a lot in both my previous firms, but I was really looking forward to representing plaintiffs,” she says. “I feel much more that I’m helping people and being a beacon of hope when they’re facing difficult circumstances in their lives.”

Shen is married to a scientist who works on HIV research, and the family is rounded out by a daughter who was born in June 2017, though Shen hastens to add that a corgi born in September 2013 continues as a key, much beloved member of the family unit.
